As of May 20, 2003 there are new rules for new drivers in Alberta. Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) will ensure new drivers, regardless of age, get the support, skills and experience they need t handle the complex task of driving.
In order to upgrade your licence, (for eg. to Class 1) you must first have completed the GDL program and be fully licensed, including successful completion of the advanced road test.
To receive your Learner's Licence (Class 7), you must pass a vision test and a written knowledge test. Anyone 14 years or older can receive a Learner's Licence, but until you turn 18, you need to have your parent's consent. The Learner Stage lasts for a minimum of one year but can be renewed indefinitely.
Conditions:
Drive with a fully licensed driver who is 18 years of age or older sitting in the front passenger seat. You will be fined $200 and two demerit points if you violate this condition.
No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. You could face a $100 fine and two demerit points if you violate this condition.
To become a Probationary Driver you must:
Have your Learner's Licence for at least one year.
Pass a road test.
Be 16 years of age or older.
Shared Conditions for Learner's and Probationary Drivers:
Have a seat belt for every passenger. There is a $100 fine and two demerit points if you violate this condition.
Fewer demerit points are allowed (eight) than for fully licensed drivers (15).
Cannot serve as an accompanying driver to a Learner.
Time spent suspended will have to be made up before moving on to the next stage.
Upgrading to a commercial licence is not possible.
Have a zero alcohol level. If you violate this condition, your licence will be suspended for 30 days.
Once you've successfully passed through the Learner Stage, you will enter into the Probationary Stage. You must have spent at least one year as a Learner.
To become a fully licensed driver you must:
Have spent a minimum of two years in the Probationary Stage.
Be suspension free during the last year of this stage.
Pass an advanced road test. (Available in Lloydminster or larger centers only. Complete list available).
